Phimosectomy or circumcision (surgical removal of the foreskin) is performed on men and boys as part of tradition in various cultures—within the Jewish tradition, it is known as Brit Milah. In Western cultures, this surgery of the male reproductive organ is performed for aesthetic, medical, hygienic, or sexual reasons.
The main medical reason is phimosis, which is defined as the narrowing of the foreskin, preventing it from retracting to expose the glans. Phimosis can be congenital or it can
result from repeated infections in the foreskin.
Circumcision is also performed in cases of paraphimosis, repeated infections of the foreskin, and recurring infections of the glans and foreskin known as balanitis.
When it comes to aesthetic, sexual, or hygiene-related reasons, it’s a matter of personal preference. It has been shown that intimate relations can be more prolonged and satisfying, and in terms of hygiene, it becomes easier and more convenient.
The surgery is performed under local anesthesia, sometimes accompanied by mild sedation to help manage stress. Phimosectomy is quick, lasting about half an hour, and once the anesthesia wears off, the patient returns to normal.
After the procedure, it’s important to rest for a couple of days if possible, as there will be some swelling and redness, which usually goes away within a week to ten days.
Hygiene during the recovery period is essential, and dressings should be changed after each urination. It’s also important to wear underwear that keeps the penis in an upright position, tucked toward the navel, to promote venous return and help reduce swelling.
After two weeks, the patient can resume sports activities, and after one month, they can return to their intimate life.
After a couple of weeks, a protective layer develops over the glans, and the unpleasant sensitivity fades. To swim or engage in sports, it’s best to wait three to four weeks. The stitches used in a phimosectomy are dissolvable and typically fall out within 7 to 14 days.
After four to six weeks, you can resume masturbation or intimate relations.
